IVF: All You Need To Know

The IVF Clinic at AMRI provides for a variety of assisted reproduction techniques, each having its own set of eligibility criteria.

  • IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): Most suited for couples with unexplained infertility issues or for women with cervical mucus issues. The first step towards pregnancy.
  • ICSI (IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection): For patients with severe low count in semen parameters.
  • IVF (InVitro Fertilisation): A long procedure started after 3 or more unsuccessful attempts of the above, it involves fertilisation of the egg outside the uterus, and then  implantation of the fertilised egg artificially.
  • AIH (Artificial Insemination by Husband): An artificial way of insemination using the lady's eggs and the husband's sperm
  • AID (Artificial Insemination by Donor) In case the husband's sperm count is poor, help is taken from an external sperm bank to inseminate the eggs.
  • TESA/ PESA/MESA: Different methods of sperm aspiration, both surgically and non surgically when there is noted obstruction of the semen pathway for the sperm to enter as well as decreased sperm count in the semen.
  • Surrogacy: When the uterus is unable to carry the fertilised egg due to any malformation, the fertilised egg is implanted in another woman's uterus, making her the surrogate mother..
  • Fertility Preservation: There are occasions when the egg, oocyte or sperm are vitrified for delayed childbirth, as long as the patients want. These usually happen when the patient(s) is prone to develop malignancies later.
  • Egg Donation: For women reaching menopause, but not yet conceived, egg donation is considered a very viable option.
  • PGD/PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis): A new age technique to detect chromosomal abnormalities that may hinder the process of implantation or may cause recurrent miscarriages.
  • ERA (Endometrial Receptibility Analysis): A new technique to help determine the exact, best time for implantation

IVF: Myths vs Facts

While assisted reproduction techniques have proved a saviour to many childless couples, they come with their own share of public opinion. Here are a few absolutely baseless thoughts one needs to steer dear of.

Myth. Children conceived artificially are actually someone else's Fact Not at all. They're conceived of you and will remain yours for the rest of your life.

Myth: Children conceived artificially are sickly and low in immunity

Myth: Fertility drugs cause cancer

Myth: Multiple eggs mean the risk of twins or more Fact with the advancement of technology, we can choose to implant only the best and healthiest embryo, unless you specify otherwise.

Fact. There are no studies to prove such as a rule. Once the egg is implanted, it will grow its own course inside a womb, drawing nutrients from the mother naturally.

Fact: Over 48.5 million couples have experienced the joy of parenthood through assisted reproduction techniques. There are no studies to show that fertility drugs have been a cause of cancer.
