Monsoon Brings Forth Threat of Dengue & Malaria

As the monsoon season casts its spell, bringing relief from scorching heat and a refreshed landscape, it also ushers in the fear of a surge in cases of dengue and malaria. These vector-borne diseases, transmitted primarily through mosquitoes, have long been a cause for concern, especially during the rainy season.

Dr. Sayan Chakraborty, a specialist in Infectious Diseases at AMRI Hospitals, sheds light on these diseases and offers valuable insights on how to stay protected.

Dengue and malaria may present themselves differently, but they share a common starting point, fever. This sometimes makes it challenging to differentiate between the two in the initial stages. Dr. Chakraborty notes that fever during the monsoon months should not be taken lightly, especially if it persists for more than a couple of days.

In the face of any fever during the monsoon season, the wise course of action is to promptly seek medical assistance. Dr. Chakraborty emphasizes that a visit to the doctor serves as a vital step in diagnosis and early management. Running appropriate tests to determine the exact nature of the illness is crucial. Both dengue and malaria require specific tests for accurate identification.

Prevention holds the key to curbing the spread of these diseases. Dr. Chakraborty advocates several precautionary measures. The most fundamental of these is to control mosquito breeding by eliminating stagnant water pools around homes. Stagnant water provides the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, which in turn increases the risk of contracting these diseases.

Additionally, the use of mosquito nets and repellents forms a formidable defense against mosquito bites. These simple, yet effective, measures can significantly reduce the chances of getting infected. Wearing clothes that cover the arms and the legs also acts as a barrier between mosquitoes and the skin.

Once diagnosed, the journey toward recovery begins. Both dengue and malaria treatment strategies emphasize the importance of staying well-hydrated. Dr. Chakraborty stresses the significance of drinking ample water and other fluids, which aids in maintaining bodily functions, regulating temperature, and supporting the immune system's fight against infection.

However, in severe cases, medical intervention becomes paramount. Symptoms such as stomach ache, bleeding from the gums, urine, or cough should never be ignored. These signs may indicate a more critical stage of dengue and require immediate medical attention. Timely intervention can prevent the situation from escalating.

While most cases of dengue and malaria can be managed with proper medical care and hydration, a subset of patients might face more severe complications. Dr. Chakraborty points out specific red flags that should not be ignored. The inability to eat or drink, coupled with a platelet count falling below 50,000, calls for urgent medical attention. Additionally, experiencing shortness of breath can indicate a critical stage that necessitates immediate intervention.

Dr. Chakraborty's insights make it evident that these diseases are not to be taken lightly. Prevention through vigilant mosquito control measures, timely medical intervention, and a focus on hydration is pivotal in navigating this seasonal health challenge. While recovery is often smooth with appropriate care, recognizing critical signs and seeking medical help promptly can avert more severe complications.
