Pulmonary Medicine
Work Experience in the UK
My training in Respiratory Medicine was in Papworth Hospital and Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge, UK as
well as in West Suffolk Hospital. Apart from general respiratory training I worked in the Heart and Lung
Transplant unit, the Pulmonary Hypertension unit, the Allergy and Immunology unit and Thoracic Oncology. I
did 18 months of training and research in sleep medicine, non-invasive ventilation and weaning from
mechanical ventilation. I spent some time in the adult Cystic Fibrosis/ Bronchiectasis unit.
After getting my CCST in respiratory medicine I worked as a consultant in respiratory and general medicine for
1 year before returning to India in 2001. I subsequently returned to the UK for a 4 month consultant post in
2005.
Work Experience in India
I set up the Respiratory Medicine department of Salt Lake AMRI Hospital (then Suraksha Hospital) with the help
of my colleagues. We have an integrated Respiratory Medicine with Pulmonary Function laboratory and a
Bronchoscopy suite. My spectrum of patients include severely ill intensive care patients with ARDS and other
varieties of respiratory failure and post-acute non-invasive ventilation and the usual asthmatic, pneumonia and
COPD patients. We have set up excellent liaison with the radiology services as I have a special interest in
thoracic radiology.
Specialty Clinics
We run an Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic – the first of its kind in eastern India – to provide state of the art care
to our patients.
