RESPIRATORY CARE WEEK: TEACHING THE ART OF BREATHING FRESH AND SMOOTH

Oxygen is the most important thing one needs to be alive and energy is what keeps the body going. Respiration is mainly about these two elements— oxygen and energy. Without a doubt, respiration is the most important biological process in the human body, because of its association with generation of energy. This Respiratory Care Week (20-26 October), it becomes important to know about the process of respiration and the system associated with it. The Respiratory Care Week is observed all over India with various heart specialist hospitals in Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, etc, organizing free respiratory health programs.

Respiration Vs breathing

A number of people from across the globe use respiration and breathing interchangeably, even though the two are opposite of each other. Both these processes, although interlinked, are quite distinct in meaning. Breathing, also known as ventilation, is a physical process of moving air in and out of the lungs. On the other hand, respiration is a metabolic function that transforms consumed food into energy.

Know the Respiratory System

You can live without food for several days and, in some cases, without water for a couple of days, but when the respiratory system comes to a halt, a few minutes of survival becomes difficult. The aforementioned fact perfectly states the significance of the respiratory system.

Nasal cavity, oral cavity (mouth), pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchioles, lungs, and respiratory muscles are among the major organs of respiratory system. Each organ has specific tasks that are preformed to generate adenosine triphosphate or ATP, which is the energy currency in the body.

The anatomy

The air enters the body through the nasal cavity or the mouth, and passes through the pharynx (throat). It then descends into the laryngopharynx. Since pharynx is also used to swallow food, epiglottis makes sure that food and air do not get intermixed. Trachea provides smooth passage to the air entering and going out of the lungs. Bronchi and bronchioles are found at the inferior end of the trachea. They are found in the form of branches, termed as primary, secondary, and tertiary bronchi. These bronchioles are spread throughout the lungs. They fetch air into the lungs from the trachea. The respiratory system nurtures the cells of the body with oxygen, while removing carbon dioxide so that an organism can live healthy.

Awareness campaigns are being organized all across the country so that people start caring about the respiratory system. “Earlier, people didn’t have much knowledge about problems arising in the respiratory system. Over the years, we have been successful with our efforts to make people of Kolkata aware of respiratory health,” said a cardiac specialist at AMRI Hospitals.

You can attend one of the many events aimed at propagating respiratory knowledge at Kolkata hospitals by the best cardiologists in Kolkata.
